ARE YOU WILLING TO BE A SERVANT?
"WHO ALTHOUGH HE EXISTED IN THE FORM OF GOD, DID NOT REGARD EQUALITY WITH GOD A THING TO BE GRASPED... BUT EMPTIED HIMSELF, TAKING THE FORM OF A BOND-SERVANT..." (Philippians 2:6).
NOTHING IS CLEARER FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT than that JESUS EXPECTS us to take the low position of servants. Only those who are prepared to live under the shadow of Calvary, always contemplating the humility and brokenness of the LORD JESUS for us, will be willing for that position.
FIRST, THERE ARE TWO KINDS of servants. The hired servant has his wages paid and has certain rights. Then there are bond-servants... or slaves... with no rights, wages, or appeal. JESUS was a bond-servant willing to be treated as the will of the Father and the malice of men might decree, if He might thereby serve men and bring them back to God. We are to be bond-servants of Him... showing how low is our true position!
"FOR WE DO NOT PREACH OURSELVES BUT CHRIST JESUS AS LORD, AND OURSELVES AS YOUR BOND-SERVANTS FOR JESUS' SAKE." (2 Corinthians 4:5)
TO BE A SERVANT TO JESUS, we must be a servant to others. An unwillingness to serve others in costly and humbling ways... JESUS takes it as an unwillingness to serve Him. We thus put ourselves out of fellowship with Him.
